Many people are confused about hair loss. At the end of the day, hair loss sufferers are looking for a solution. This is why I felt it was important to reveal the facts about hair loss to you.

What triggers hair loss?

The most common reason for hair loss is inheritance. Males and females inherit the gene for hair loss from either or both parents. Guys are most frequently affected by the inherited gene as the hormone, testosterone, triggers the genetic program triggering loss of hair roots.

Currently there is no recognized technique of stopping this type of hair loss. The onset of hair loss will vary from person to person. Extreme ailment, poor nutrition, or vitamin insufficiency can accelerate the hair loss process. When applied incorrectly, irreversible hair color and chemical relaxers harm the hair and roots to the degree that hair loss can be long-term.

I thought it was extremely important for me to mention this. The reasons for hair loss do not consist of wearing a hat, extreme shampooing, the absence of blood flow, or clogged pores. It is sad that many websites and books still push this type of outdated information.

Do hair transplants truly work?

Yes. The transplanted hair is removed from one area of the body (donor site) and moved to another (recipient site). The transferred tissue is not “rejected” as it is not foreign tissue. The transplanted hair preserves its own characteristics; color, structure, development rate, and curl, after transplant and re-growth.

The vitality of the grafted follicle is maintained by the rich blood supply to the scalp. Initially, round grafts consisting of 15-20 hairs were transplanted resulting in visible and unnatural results.

Over the years, instruments and methods have been developed that enable us to achieve really natural results by transplanting little grafts close together called single follicular hair transplantation. We have found that hair grows from the scalp in groups of 1, 2, and 3 hair follicles. We move these groups of follicles after eliminating the excess surrounding fatty tissue. This allows the grafts to be placed closer together, resulting in a denser and even more natural result.

What about the claims made by other hair loss treatments?

Here is another fact about hair loss that many do not know. There are only two products accepted by the FDA for hair loss: Propecia ® and Rogaine ®. Neither Propecia nor Rogaine has actually been shown to restore hair in the frontal areas. Make sure that you read this next part carefully. Propecia and Rogaine can slow and even stop hair loss, while hair transplants can recover hair that was lost. I think it is important that I point out that, there is nothing that is proven to actually grow hair back, except hair transplantation.

Some hair shampoos may give the hair a fuller look and feel. However the hair loss products that declare to “cure” hair loss are not legitimate. Before I move on, I want to emphasize one more time that there is no remedy for hair loss on the market besides having a hair transplant procedure performed.

What about female hair loss?

More than 20 million women in the United States alone are dealing with hair loss. The number one reason for hair loss in women is hormones. An overactive or under active thyroid gland may trigger thinning hair. Hormones can likewise cause hair loss if female hormones (estrogens and progesterone), are out of balance. Nevertheless, if the hormone imbalance is remedied, the hair loss will usually stop. Therefore, hair loss and menopause are frequently linked and result in thinning hair in older women. Before menopause, about 13 percent of women experience hair loss. After menopause, reporting of the problem from women increases to about 37 percent. In addition, childbearing can lead to a remarkable loss of hair following the hormone shift.
